Choosing Fish Species for Your Home Aquaponics System
The fish you choose is one of the most consequential decisions in setting up a home aquaponics system. Get it right and your fish will grow steadily, produce plenty of waste to feed your plants, and be reasonably forgiving when conditions drift. Get it wrong and you may find yourself heating or cooling large volumes of water at real cost, or watching stressed fish that refuse to eat. The single most important filter to apply before anything else is climate: the ambient temperature of your location will determine which species are even viable, and it is far easier to choose a fish that suits your climate than to fight the climate on behalf of your fish.
Why temperature is the starting point
Fish are ectotherms. Their body temperature tracks the water around them, and that water temperature governs almost everything: how fast they metabolise, whether they eat, how quickly they grow, and how well their immune system functions. As the Aquaponic Solutions water chemistry fact sheet explains, fish do not like fast changes in water temperature, and if the temperature shifts by more than 1.5 to 2 degrees Celsius in less than 24 hours, most fish suffer to some extent. The first thing that changes when temperature moves outside a fish's preferred range is feeding behaviour, and in an aquaponics context, a fish that stops eating produces no waste, which means the plants receive fewer nutrients.
The practical implication is that when you are choosing a species, you need to think about the extremes of your local climate, not the comfortable average. What does your water temperature reach on the coldest nights of winter? What does it climb to during a summer heatwave? As BYAP Magazine Issue 1 notes, it is essential to consider the extremes of winter and summer and to have suitable means of maintaining water temperature within the desired range during those periods. Using large amounts of energy to heat or cool your water carries both financial and environmental costs, so the most sustainable strategy is to grow fish that are genuinely suited to your climate.
Jade Perch in warm and subtropical systems
Scortum barcoo, commonly known as Jade Perch or Barcoo Grunter, is one of the most popular species in Australian backyard aquaponics, and for good reason. It is a native freshwater fish adapted to the wide temperature and water quality swings of the Lake Eyre catchment, which makes it a hardy and forgiving choice for home growers in warm climates.
According to BYAP Magazine Issue 1, Jade Perch have an optimum temperature range of 22 to 28 degrees Celsius and can tolerate anywhere from 13 to 32 degrees, though growth becomes negligible below 20 degrees and feeding should stop below 16 degrees. They love the heat and dislike the cold, which means for outdoor systems they are best suited to tropical or subtropical climates.
Growth rates are solid. The same source reports that table-sized fish of 350 to 800 grams can be grown in 8 to 15 months in outdoor ponds and tanks, with food conversion ratios (FCR) of around 1.2:1 for fingerlings and 1.6:1 for growout. In plain terms, that means roughly 1.2 to 1.6 kilograms of feed produces one kilogram of fish. Jade Perch are voracious and will eat a wide variety of food including worms, insects, algae, duckweed, leafy vegetables and pellets. Their enthusiasm for eating is actually something to watch: BYAP Magazine Issue 1 cautions that overfeeding can occur easily, leading to ammonia spikes in the system.
Jade Perch have a much higher metabolic rate than some other native species, so they should be stocked at a lower density than Silver Perch to avoid water quality problems.
Barramundi for tropical systems with robust filtration
Lates calcarifer, Barramundi, is a fish many home growers aspire to keep, and it can work well in aquaponics provided the conditions are right. The requirements, however, are non-negotiable.
BYAP Magazine Issue 2 sets the optimum temperature at 28 degrees Celsius, with a workable range of 25 to 30 degrees. Barramundi will survive below 25 degrees but food intake and growth rates drop. Cold nights a few degrees lower are tolerable, but constant temperatures below 25 degrees are not recommended. This makes Barramundi a genuinely tropical species: in practice, it suits Far North Queensland and similarly warm regions well, but becomes increasingly difficult to maintain in subtropical winters without active heating.
Growth is exceptionally fast when conditions are right. BYAP Magazine Issue 2 reports that in cultured fish a 2:1 FCR is common, meaning two kilograms of feed produces one kilogram of bodyweight, and it is possible to raise plate-sized fish of around half a kilogram within six months in a well-managed system. Barramundi are carnivorous and require a high-protein diet: they will rarely eat vegetable matter, and their feed should consist of quality commercial pellets supplemented with live foods such as worms, invertebrates, and feeder fish.
Because Barramundi consume large amounts of high-protein food, they produce a significant waste load. BYAP Magazine Issue 2 is clear that to keep a decent number and grow them out safely, your filtration must be adequate for the waste produced, and aeration must be continuous. Barramundi have a high metabolism and burn through dissolved oxygen quickly, so water movement cannot be allowed to stop.
Silver Perch as a cool-tolerant alternative
Silver Perch are less well known publicly than Barramundi but have a devoted following among experienced home growers, largely because of their toughness and their tolerance of lower temperatures. As Gary Donaldson writes in Practical Aquaponics for Everyone Issue 2, Silver Perch are still eating well and moving briskly at water temperatures down to 15 degrees Celsius, a temperature at which Barramundi would already be slowing down significantly. That tolerance makes them a practical choice for subtropical and temperate backyards where winter water temperatures regularly drop into the mid-teens.
Silver Perch are also less aggressive than Barramundi and tend not to bother smaller fish sharing the same tank, which gives more flexibility in how you manage your stock over time. Tilapia where it is legally permitted
Tilapia is the dominant species in commercial aquaponics globally, particularly in North America, and is noted in the ATTRA aquaponics guide as being tolerant of fluctuating water conditions including pH, temperature, oxygen, and dissolved solids. Rainbow Trout for cool-climate and winter growing
Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) sit at the opposite end of the temperature spectrum. According to BYAP Magazine Issue 3, their optimum growing temperature is 13 to 17 degrees Celsius. They can tolerate as low as 3 degrees and as high as 24 degrees, but not for extended periods at either extreme. In warm climates, Rainbow Trout are best approached as a winter crop rather than a year-round species. When kept in their preferred temperature range, Rainbow Trout have impressive FCRs. Trout have a high dissolved oxygen requirement compared to many other aquaponics species, so aeration needs to be strong and consistent. They are also sensitive to stress. Keeping water quality high and handling fish as little as possible are the primary defences against disease in a trout system.
Matching your choice to your conditions
Once you have narrowed down your species options by climate, consider these practical factors before committing to fingerlings:
- Fingerling availability. Some species are widely available from hatcheries; others require planning ahead or transporting stock over distance. Barramundi fingerlings in particular need to be sourced reliably, as BYAP Magazine Issue 2 notes that a plentiful fingerling supply is one of the two key requirements for a successful Barramundi system.
- Filtration capacity. High-protein feeders like Barramundi produce more waste than omnivores like Jade Perch or Silver Perch. Make sure your system's biological filtration can handle the species you choose at the stocking density you intend. - Diet and feeding management. Carnivorous species like Barramundi need high-protein commercial feeds and cannot be supplemented with vegetable scraps in the way that omnivores can. Jade Perch, by contrast, will eat almost anything available in or around a backyard system.
- Temperature management infrastructure. If your chosen species requires water outside your ambient range for part of the year, think through how you will manage that before you stock fish. A practical way to think about it: if you are in a warm to tropical climate with consistent summer temperatures above 25 degrees, Barramundi or Jade Perch are natural fits. If your winters regularly drop below 20 degrees but rarely go below 15, Silver Perch are the more forgiving choice. If you have cool winters and mild summers, Rainbow Trout as a winter-into-spring crop can make excellent use of the season when warm-water species would struggle. Many growers in subtropical climates run warm-water fish through summer and trout through winter, effectively running two crops in sequence through the year.
Whatever you choose, monitor your water temperature closely from the day you stock fish. A consistent approach to water chemistry testing will tell you quickly if temperature or other parameters are drifting into territory that will affect your fish's feeding and growth.
