Choosing a Site and Setting Up Your First Backyard Aquaponics System
The most important decisions in aquaponics happen before you spend a single dollar. Where you put your system determines how well your plants grow, how easy the whole thing is to manage day to day, and what problems you will face in six months' time. Walking your yard with a clear checklist before you buy anything is time very well spent.
Start with sunlight, and think about the whole year
Plants are the reason the fish-waste cycle works. Without good growth in the grow beds, nutrients accumulate and the balance tips. The IBC of Aquaponics guide notes that you need at least four to six hours of good sunlight a day for your plants to grow well. Your fish, on the other hand, do not need sunlight at all. In fact, direct sun on your fish tank encourages algae growth, so the ideal arrangement puts the grow beds in the sun and keeps the tank in shade where possible.
One trap that catches a lot of first-timers is planning the site in summer and forgetting that the sun tracks a very different course in winter. What looks like a sun-drenched spot in December can be almost fully shaded by a fence or roof overhang in June. The IBC of Aquaponics guide specifically flags this: what works well in summer could have little to no usable sunlight in winter, and vice versa. Stand in the candidate spot at different times of day and look at where shadows fall. If you can, check it on a winter's day before committing.
Level ground, structural load, and drainage
Water is heavy. A fish tank holding 1,000 litres weighs a tonne before you add the tank itself, any fittings, or the surrounding grow beds filled with media. The ground beneath the system needs to be level and firm. The account of Jaymie's system near Townsville, described in Backyard Aquaponics Magazine (Issue 2, 2008), is a good example: the site was on a hill with rocky ground, and a bobcat was needed to create a flat, level area before anything else could happen. If your chosen spot has a noticeable slope, plan for earthworks or a level platform before you go any further.
Growing media adds significantly to the load. The IBC of Aquaponics guide points out that rock media or gravel is very heavy, and that you need to plan enough structural support for your grow beds and their stands. This is worth thinking about at the site-selection stage, not after the beds are built and full.
Overhead hazards, surrounding vegetation, and wildlife
What is above your system matters as much as what is below it. The IBC of Aquaponics guide advises against placing a system directly under any deciduous plant or any plant with heavy blossom drop. Leaves and flowers falling into the fish tank and grow beds are a persistent maintenance headache, and some plants are genuinely dangerous. The same guide notes that contamination from certain shrubs and trees has caused fish deaths, and that this can be one of the harder causes to identify because it may take only a small number of leaves or flowers from a toxic plant to affect fish. The risk is not common, but it is serious enough to be worth checking what overhangs your proposed site before you commit.
The account of Faye's system in Backyard Aquaponics Magazine (Issue 3, 2008) illustrates a related point: a large gum tree was removed to open up the site, partly because of the branch-drop risk and partly to maximise sunlight. It is worth casting the same eye over your own yard. Bird netting or a covered structure can also help protect fish and plants from local wildlife, as Jaymie's Townsville setup used side netting for exactly that purpose.
Access to power and water
A pump is not optional. You need to move water continuously, and many systems also run an air pump. The IBC of Aquaponics guide is direct on electrical safety: any pond pump must have its power supply protected by a residual current device (RCD). Before turning on the power, turn off the pump at the supply. Keep all leads protected and clear of general foot traffic. Never position an air pump above the fish tank where it could be knocked into the water. Keep electrical items like air pumps sheltered from rain and well away from water surfaces. These are not suggestions. Working with electricity near water carries real risk of electrocution, and the safety steps are non-negotiable.
Water supply is equally important. You will be topping up the system regularly to replace water lost through evaporation and plant transpiration. The IBC of Aquaponics guide recommends putting a timer on the tap when filling the system. There are many accounts of people leaving a hose running to top up the tank and forgetting about it, which can flush away the bacteria colony your system depends on. Having your top-up tap close to the system makes this less likely, and a timer makes it reliable.
Access for maintenance, planting, and harvesting
This is the detail that gets overlooked most often in early planning. The IBC of Aquaponics guide makes the point plainly: many systems are built with little or no allowance for access to the whole footprint. When everything is new and empty, you can reach most of what you need. When the grow beds are full of plants spilling over the edges, the back corner becomes very difficult to reach. The same guide recommends allowing at least 70 centimetres between grow beds, and notes that even this is sometimes not enough when plants are growing well.
Fish tank access matters too. If you are using an IBC or other container with a small opening, think about whether a fish net can actually fit through it. Being unable to catch your fish at harvest time is a frustrating problem that is easy to avoid at the planning stage and very hard to fix once the system is built.
Decide on scale before you buy anything
The consistent advice from experienced practitioners is to start smaller than your instinct tells you to. Practical Aquaponics for Everyone (Issue 1) puts it plainly: it is better to begin with a smaller project that is manageable in both cost and physical size, and once a small system is running well, scaling up is not difficult. The same source echoes this from experience, noting that starting with a 230-litre tank felt frustratingly modest at the time but proved to be the right call because of how much there is to learn in the early stages.
Two questions are worth answering honestly before you buy anything. How much can you realistically spend? And where, specifically, can the system go? A reasonable suburban block can accommodate a productive system, and a backyard-scale setup described in Backyard Aquaponics Magazine (Issue 1, 2007) ran comfortably within a 15 square metre footprint. Keeping the system close to the kitchen or back door also makes daily maintenance much easier, as noted by one household in Backyard Aquaponics Magazine (Issue 3, 2008) who prioritised proximity to the kitchen when choosing their site.
Safety for children and pets also belongs in this planning stage. Open water in a backyard carries real drowning risk for small children. The IBC of Aquaponics guide suggests that IBC tanks are relatively easy to protect with heavy mesh over the top, but whatever tank shape you use, plan the access control before the system is filled and running.
Once you have walked the site, checked the sun angles across both seasons, confirmed a flat and load-bearing base, noted what is overhead, and worked out your power and water access, you are ready to think about what equipment to buy. Getting these fundamentals right first means that the decisions that follow have a solid foundation to build on.
